HLS January CAS Challenge

Hi everyone and welcome to a new year of CAS Challenges at Happy Little Stampers!

Please welcome the team -

Anita Bowden (UK), Bonnie Klass (USA), Chrissie Stokes (UK), Hazel Kinvig-Paul (UK), Kylie Purtell (Australia), Linda Walmsley (UK), Loll Thompson (Canada), Sue Blamey (UK), Toni Maddox (USA), Valentyna Komisarenko (Canada)

Last year we focused on general techniques, with lots of options for different ways of doing them, and with different products.  This year we are going to get more specific. Each month we will be asking you to create a CAS card with a particular technique. You can use any medium that you like, but you must follow the general instructions for this technique.  Some of the techniques we will be focusing on this year have more than one way in which to do them.  We will again be providing links to video tutorials for you to check out so if you don't know how to do the technique for any particular month, or need a refresher, instructions will be there to guide you.  And our talented Design Team will be inspiring you with their creative samples. :)

Let's get started!! :)

Here's the challenge for January ...

Smooshing is one of the easiest techniques for making gorgeous backgrounds, die-cut embellishments, or paper piecing.  Simply apply colour to your work surface (distress inks, waterbased inks, sprays, re-inkers, watercolour concentrate, gelatos, inka gold, acrylic paint, etc.), spritz with water to dilute, and then drop your card stock on top (mixed media paper, watercolour paper, coated card stock, regular card stock, etc.).  Smoosh it around in the liquid and lift.  Repeat if necessary.  It's fun, easy and you get inky fingers ... what could be better??!! :)

Most of the products listed above will work with mixed media paper and watercolour paper ... and some (but not all) will work with regular card stock.  You may need to experiment to see which works for you.

Please remember to keep your cards CAS ...

At Happy Little Stampers, CAS (clean and simple) is defined as
- one main focal point
- lots of open (no pattern) space
- minimal layers
- minimal embellishments

This month we are thrilled to have Joyce (Cards-by-the-Sea) as our Guest Designer.

Lots of wonderful inspiration for you!

  1. OMG Loll, your smooshed background for your gorgeous glittery winter tree scene is FABULOUS! I am still waiting for my HLS butterfly dies and stamp set. Your technique would be perfect for the set. TFS my friend.

  2. Wow, I can't believe how different these card designs look, using the same background technique. I haven't used the smoosh technique in a long while but this is reminder of how much fun it is. Thanks for the great inspiration!

  4. So sorry....I linked my card for the Jingle challenge on this post by mistake. Please ignore my card number 10. I went back and tried to delete it but it wouldn't delete. I did go ahead and link it to the previous challenge post, Jingle, where it belongs. Sorry for the mixup!
